Gingham Picnic with Mel & Yina

A few days before my 21st birthday in September, my two crazy girl friends and I decided it would be a good idea to have a random vintage photoshoot, just for the heck of it. And of course… to celebrate our friendship!

I have no idea how this idea was born…… I think it was something like me one day suggesting a picnic for our next meet up would be great fun, then Yina was like yes we can take lots of awesome pictures and look pretty and Melissa was all “MULTIFOLDS?!”. End of story. LOL. We talked to a couple of people over the next few days, and roped in some of our friends from relevant industries. Yina settled the amazing props set up from her wedding sponsor, Melissa got the awesome photographer as Multifolds is a good friend of hers and I found us a make up artist / hairstylist! Who has now also become one of my good friends! This shoot turned out to be such a blessing.

I’ve always loved everything vintage – I used to listen to songs from the 50′s to 70′s EVERYDAY and I’m obsessed with vintage fashion, so I couldn’t be happier when it was decided that the theme should be Gingham! We were going to settle for just “floral pastel” and the whole whimsical look at first, but I’m so glad that my stubbornness prevailed that we pushed through normalcy and went ahead with a more challenging but unique concept! The pictures turned out even better than I’d expected when I was trying to visualize it in my head.

Behind The Scenes

Setting up on site!

We were far behind schedule (we are always late, I think it’s a blogger thing) so we scrambled around like mad upon arriving, it wasn’t long before we would lose the sunlight. Lucky for us, the main decorations have already been prepared by the conscientious Suying from MerryLove Weddings prior to our arrival, so we just had to shift certain things around a bit! She cleverly put together such a lovely combination of props that fitted our theme to a T. We couldn’t believe how pretty our little picnic set  looked when we set eyes on it! :) They do mainly weddings but can also tend to themed photoshoot requests like these! (Perfect for pre-wedding shots!)

I brought customized cupcakes and my signature rainbow cake for the shoot, of course. What’s a picnic without pretty cakes? I could also finally put my awesome ferris wheel cupcake stand to very good use! I was wondering when I was gonna get around to taking that expensive thing out of the original packaging.

Ummm… I’m trying to figure out if this was a fail shot of me trying to act cute or an unfortunate candid. Anyway, don’t you love our crazy appropriate dresses from DustBunny Vintage?! Going to their quaint little store and trying on their one-of-a-kind pre-loved vintage dresses, looking for the perfect fitting one was the funnest thing ever! There’s just something special about knowing no one else will be wearing the same dress as you. It’s like wearing a piece of history on yourself!

After a couple of frantic minutes went by, we began shooting!!!!! Everything happened so fast…. it was like CHOP CHOP, snap snap, ok let’s go next scene. Being a model is no easy work! Of course, Melissa was an absolute natural at it, whereas myself and Yina were a lot more awkward and oaf-ish. XD (I claim the throne of awkward queen, though)

Pouting pitifully as Yina fixes my hair for me. Sometimes she’s like a mummy to me in the best way!

Done with the first set of photos, and we’re off to a big open field for some movement shots!

Awww, I love that even off-camera (these were candids), we’re holding hands ♥ ♥ ♥

Here are some precious memories beautifully captured by the amazing Multifolds Photography. Whom I consider to be one of the best wedding photographers in Singapore! It was a huge privilege having Melvin document this for us.

Photoshoot Pictures

Getting to know Melissa and getting closer to Yina must be some of the best things that happened to me this year.

In these two ladies, I have found great friends that I can share happiness, tough times and tons of laughter with. We can talk about everything and nothing, and even in our periods of quiet silences, awkwardness never creeps in. Conversations, I can have with anyone, but it’s the people I can have comfortable silences with that I treasure.

Yina wasn’t someone I thought I’d become close to when I first got to know her, but I grew to appreciate her as a person more and more through the months and years. She is extremely kind & understanding, someone who quietly observes situations & people, making up her own mind about them instead of being too quick to judge. She keeps it real all the time and brings me back to earth whenever I get my head stuck in the clouds. In some ways, I feel she’s a lot like me. I think she too, knows what it’s like to be wallflower in the past. She really gets what you’re trying to say when you share matters of the heart with her. More often than not, I end up pouring out my bottled up feelings to her, something I don’t do with most of my friends, not because I don’t trust them but because I feel like they won’t get me. But I feel like Yina does. She listens.

I LOVE her sense of humor and how straightforward she is… Her dramatic facial expressions alone without her voice is enough to crack me up. You can count on her to make you feel better no matter how lousy a mood you’re in.

She has so many underrated talents about her – always making people laugh, being an impressive artist, sings like an angel..

Melissa is something special.

She has this innate positive ball of energy that surrounds her very being. When you’re standing next to her, it’s impossible to feel negative emotions. She’s always so happy that it makes you happy, too. I think it’s that million dollar smile of hers that infects you. Sometimes I think she’s some sort of superwoman. Mel is ALWAYS busy, always doing something, always looking great while she’s doing it. She might seem like a princess on the outside, but she isn’t afraid to do silly & unglamorous things together with her friends in the name of fun and she’s still down to earth despite her popularity.

Mel is that sort of girl that every guy, and every girl loves. Everybody loves her, but me, especially so!! Melissa, Yina & I, we share strong interests in the same things – photography (for our Instagram & blog), being photographed (also for our Instagram & blog), blogging (I see a recurring theme here), make up, FOOD, fashion, adventure, making fun of our boyfriends, spontaneity & all things frivolous and fabulous…. but what I truly love most about these two is that they are good people, through and through. At the very core of a person, what matters is whether they have a beautiful heart or not.

Each so different and wonderful in their own way, these lovely friends of mine constantly inspire me to be a better person and a better friend, even if they don’t actually know it or aren’t purposefully trying to do so.

“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”

Lost at sea with Marco Bicego

Out of all the blogging events I’ve attended over the years, this has gotta be one of the more memorable ones. Perfectly executed with sophistication and the right amount of information and fun factor injected into the event.. I couldn’t not share the pictures with you guys!!!

A private yacht, marveling at and temporarily donning expensive jewelry I can’t afford, champagne, gorgeous weather and a day out at sea.. What could make this day more perfect?
The fact that I had one of my bestest friends and my gorgeous mom on board with me, of course! :)

It was such a beautiful day to set sail, and simply to be out and about in the sun!

Yeah, I’m one of those girls who brings her mum everywhere. Including media / social events. What can I say? I’m a mummy’s girl!

Honestly though, I wanted to bring my mum to see all the gorgeous jewelry Marco Bicego had just launched. She sure does love her fancy stones and bling. And that afternoon, we were among the first to preview the amazing collection “Murano”, newly released in Singapore!

Marco Bicego

“Enamored by all the little things the world has to offer, Marco Bicego has the remarkable ability to assimilate his experiences and interpret it through his collections. Every collection is symbolic of an exotic location, and every piece an amalgam of his adventures.
Marco Bicego forms a unique affinity with women, bringing out the spirited wanderlust in all of us. From a walk in the forest, relishing in the silence to the bustling sights and sounds of the cities, Marco Bicego transforms his experiences into cherished trinkets that excite women. 100% hand made in the North East of Italy by expert craftsmen and artisans, Marco Bicego’s jewellery symbolizes both wild abandonment, and a homage to the classic Italian experience.”
My mum just couldn’t take her eyes off these precious jewels!

They were so exquisite up close…. and if there’s anything that gets my mother excited, it’s dangerously expensive things. If I were perhaps ten times richer than I was now, I would buy it immediately for mum, just to see that look on her face again every time she wore it. Every woman deserves to feel that special and beautiful everyday, don’t you think?

I’m not big on jewelry myself and have to admit I don’t know a whole lot about gold, diamonds or precious stones, however, I have to say that Marco Bicego pieces are unlike anything I’ve seen around in stores before. They’re bold, but not too tacky or over the top, with every single piece makes an elegant statement.

The Murano Collection
“Marco Bicego’s latest collection is inspired by the colourful architecture and carefree artistic inhibitions of idyllic Venetian town Burano, the Murano collection is an ecstasy of brightly coloured gems and carefully wrought 18 carat gold. Elements of glass blowing and geometric designs are representative of the beautiful town and is a true expression of the vibrant and fiery art culture in Burano. Emblematic of ‘everyday luxury’, the use of kaleidoscopic precious gems is both delicate and bold to be wearable with any ensemble, for day or night.”

Melissa’s wearing pieces from “Murano”, and I’m decked out in “Africa”, my favorite collection from Marco Bicego!

I absolutely adore how organic they look with the evenly uneven lines and shapes, it looks so raw. The unique texture was created from painstakingly individually hand carved lines!

For some reason Coldplay’s “Paradise” starts playing in my head when I see this. Is that normal?

Vernetta Lopez was our host for the event, and here she is having a Titanic moment!
She was so friendly and down to earth, and made a fantastic emcee. We took a couple of pictures, but I look hideous in them, so I guess those will never see the light of day.

I know I’ll always have a good time with my baby girl Mel around!! :*

There was only us two bloggers on the yacht that day, with the few other older media people coming from magazines and other traditional publications, which means they had absolutely zero interest of taking any pictures, especially of themselves. Which ALSO meant that Mel and I pretty much had a ridiculously fun private yacht photoshoot going on for the three whole hours we were sailing!!! Highlight of my week.

Taken with my iPhone 5. With good lighting, anything’s possible!

We were busy snapping shamelessly pretty pictures and giggling uncontrollably while everyone else sat back and chatted the evening away while sipping on champagne.

Aw, I have like… the prettiest friend ever :’)

With this girl, I can do anything. Talk about our future plans, go on double dates with our partners, share relationship problems with, conversations about everything and nothing at 2am in the morning, laugh over the most unglamorous situations we get ourselves in and be absolutely silly together. ♥

At one point in time, I met up with her at least 4 days out of a week!

We were happily lying down on the netting, soaking up the sun rays, completely oblivious and unsuspecting… when out of nowhere, a HUGE wave splashed up on us from the bottom (it has holes for water to seep through), soaking us quite thoroughly, to the amusement of onlookers!!!!!!

I got a whole face (and eyeballs) full of saltwater!!! Not to mention I almost lost my phone to the sea as well, much to the horror of the person beside us, who made a dramatic lunge for my phone. He told me if he wasn’t sure whether to help me up, or to retrieve my phone before it fell down a hole and into the sea. I’m glad he went for the phone! The boat rocked up and down like a roller coaster and Melissa and I scrambled about on all fours like monkeys to get to a safe, dry area. A lot of shrieking ensued (and slight cursing from me), but at the end of the day it was all good fun and nothing a towel and drying off in the sun couldn’t fix!

How amazing would it to be to have a boat of your own, so you could chase sunsets like these everyday if you wanted to? Especially in a country where you could see dolphins, or orcas. That would be a dream come true for me.

For those few hours, I felt transported out of my everyday life, out of Singapore. I really like being near the water. It’s so serene and good for the soul. Like waterfront dining, beach activities and things like whale watching… they make me very, VERY happy!

A big thank you to Marco Bicego and TianPo Jewellery for having us on board! It was nothing short of lovely to have spent the evening with you. :)

“TianPo Jewellery is Marco Bicego’s official retailer in Singapore. This October, TianPo Jewellery is proud to support the Breast Cancer Foundation Singapore with a donation campaign: Step out in PINK. A color long associated with TianPo Jewellery and the Breast Cancer Foundation Singapore respectively, the color pink represents all that is feminine and strong.

In addition, TianPo will be serving glasses of rosé to each customer who wears pink on the weekends of October as a token of appreciation for their support. A salute to breast cancer patients everywhere, TianPo pays homage to the bold and beautiful women fighting the illness with this donation campaign. So step out in PINK and raise your glasses to the strong women around us!”

Halloween Horror Nights 3 at Universal Studios!

Halloween isn’t something I’d normally get excited over, but in recent years, that’s kinda changed.

A couple of nights ago, I scared myself senseless when I went for the media preview of the highly anticipated Halloween Horror Nights 3 at Universal Studios Singapore. It’s an annual event whereby Universal Studios Singapore turns their family theme park into something a little less PG-rated and very Halloween Worthy! Think haunted houses, fake blood & gore everywhere with extremely dedicated scare actors to top everything off. I wouldn’t stop screaming for the first half hour, it was THAT convincing! I attended HHN2 last year for the first time, and it was soooo good. I was blown away by the special effects and elaborate set up. You’ll be happy to know that this year was no let down either.

So, as though a horror-themed amusement park at night isn’t creepy enough, it was practically empty besides the staff and media personnel – I’ve never seen any theme park THAT empty before. When you walk down the street, it looks like this.

Coupled with the eerie music they constantly have playing in the background… enough to raise the hairs on my arms and legs! Apparently an important feature would be displayed here during the actual opening days – they kept it pretty hush hush and wouldn’t tell us what it was!

The park would be a lot more crowded, decorated, and filled on the actual days compared to my pictures. Please bear in mind my pictures are merely a sneak peek of what’s to come, I’m sure USS has a lot more up their sleeves! ;D

Our first stop of the night was (thank god) not a haunted house but the Hollywood Theatre, to catch a mini musical called Monsters Rock, something new they just introduced this year. That gave me sufficient time to mentally prep myself and get used to the atmosphere first!

While the show was kept moderately entertaining by enthusiastic cast members, flashy pyrotechnics & loud chart topper hits being used for the musical, I think this was meant more for the kids than the adults. (Although, really, why would you bring a little kid to such a terrifying event?)

Adults may find themselves scratching their heads halfway through the show. There’s ass grabbing and some sexual references in there as well, might I add. I’m not that keen on musicals in the first place, OR costumed monsters, so I guess my opinion is biased! Waiting for a friend to arrive at HHN3? You can catch this show in the theatre first, instead of waiting out in the open where the monsters could eat you!!!

And we’re ready for our first haunted house experience!!!!!!!! BRING IT!!!

I have 3 big strong men with me so I guess that should be a comforting factor. Although Nich (the tall one) and Jon (the white one) pretty much took turns scaring me the whole night, so I don’t know if it was better or worse having them around.

Nah, I actually love these guys.

There are three houses in total – Adrift, Songs of Death, and Possessions.

Our first haunted house, Adrift, was by far my favorite one! Compared to the other two, it was TERRIFYING. The moment you step in, you get sucked into the ambience and the real world just slips away for ten minutes. Now you’re in hell.

I know it’s a little tricky for you people to imagine how it all went down because you weren’t there, but the lighting, props, actors, music, everything just came together so, so convincingly. I CANNOT GET OVER HOW SERIOUSLY THE SCARE ACTORS TAKE THEIR ROLE. They are constantly screaming at the top of their lungs and flailing about just to alarm you. Like you’re walking down an empty, dark hallway and you think you’re safe, there’d be silence BUT THEN OUT OF NOWHERE a seemingly crazy bloodied up person runs up to your face yelling “JUST LET ME DIE. PLEASEE… JUST LET ME DIE!!!!!!!!!!”

Uh-huh. Something like that. If you’ve ever been to HHN at USS you’d know exactly what I’m talking about!

What HHN3 looks like on my camera, with flash:

What it actually was to me:

I shut my eyes through most of the first haunted house. True story. However!!!!! I managed to pluck up enough courage to remain calm through the next 2 houses. Btw, photography inside haunted houses isn’t normally allowed (yes, they will stop you and tell you off if you try.)

Even if you know the ghosts aren’t real (or are they :P), you can’t help from being freaked out. My spider senses tell me to RUNNNNN whenever something dead-looking lunges for me!

Everything in the damn haunted house moves!!!! Here’s somebody trashing about wildly, screaming for people to “let her out”.

Ok…. I have to say. That’s genuinely rather disturbing. e_e

Here’s some other genuinely disturbing things I found around the park:

Random shirtless dude that started cussing at me or something hahahah. Holding a bowl and something I don’t recognize. I did NOT understand what he was supposed to be. Most people were dead / zombies / in character. What’s he meant to be, a drunk Indian guy????  Anybody knows?

Ok… I’ll admit. hanging stuff really freak me out :( Especially if they look like little children dangling from a tree. Urgh.

When I was minding my own business, chatting with my friends about what we thought of the haunted houses…. THIS walked right by me, ever so nonchalantly

SUPER TALL LOOKING HEADLESS GUY OMG. Probably the best costume I saw that night!!!!! I chased after him for a picture and he turned around and did this.

LOL! Not sure which is creepier. The whole headless get up, or the real person’s eyes staring at me through the black part of the suit. Fuck me.

Apart from haunted houses, there are also 3 “scare zones” which are themed zones that you walk through. Attack of the Vampires, Forbidden Forest & Convention of Curses. I loved Attack of the Vampires’ graveyard setting! Not that I particularly like graveyards in any way normally, but this was pretty awesome.

At times I think a rag doll is an actor waiting to frighten the shit outta me… and other times, the unsuspecting me falls prey to a costumed character who hid so stealthily in the dark, I didn’t see it coming at all until it was suddenly right next to me. *cue Jessica’s high pitched shriek*

They WILL run up to your face and try to fuck with you by the way, they did that a lot to me because I was one of the few girls there….. so if you’re a naturally violent person… try not to punch anyone? It’s all in the name of good fun.

All I kept thinking of the whole night was, “Wow, how many hours did this take them?” I applaud their hard work and efforts. I really do!!! It’s completely worth the entry ticket fee, to see Halloween Horror Nights at least if you haven’t before.

Just Jonathan casually snapping pics of zombies on stilts.

Just Jessica looking casually terrified of said zombies on stilts.

I’m a wuss. I jump at loud noises and scream when people tap me on the shoulder when I’m not expecting it. Haunted houses and me don’t mix. But it was still a helluva lot of fun!!!!

This lost soul kept crawling on the floor, wailing incoherently… maybe she wanted a picture with me?

Ah, Universal Studio’s signature Egyptian men on stilts!

She looks like a mix of Hermione Granger and Parvati Patil!

Yeah, why not, Sam?

I’m sorry, I really can’t dance. I could probably fly a spaceship better than I could dance, and god knows I can’t even ride a bicycle, let alone operate anything mechanical safely.

A blue Dumbledore. Ganfalf the Blue.  …….A really old smurf?

Just Jon checking out spider lady’s little display.

When I walked past one of the “booths”, some dude picked me out from the crowd and yelled at me in front of everyone…. “WHAT MAGIC DO YOU POSSESS, WITCH?!”

I couldn’t resist retorting, “BEAUTY!” before walking away. Man that felt good. He had no idea what to say to that. These undead men, think they can just pick on you like that….

We ended off our horrifically fun night stuffing our faces with some of the specially prepared food items for Halloween by the different restaurants around Universal Studios. Really cute!

Gotta love this shot I got of a scary nurse injecting jello shots into a victim’s mouth!

Halloween Horror Nights 3 is set to run through these dates: 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, 31 Oct & 1-3 Nov, 7pm to 1am. Tickets are $68 per person for this fright fest, and you can purchase them here. There are also 2 other options: Frequent Fear Nights to re-enter as many times as you want within selected dates, and a VIP tour around the park if you’re feeling extra fancy!

Whether you’re spooking or slutting it up this Halloween, I hope y’all stay safe and have a frightfully good time!!!! Take lots of pictures!

Thanks again Resorts World Sentosa for inviting me and my friends to the preview. We ran around like crazy, screamed a lot, but most importantly… laughed together a lot, despite all the crazy shit going on around us. :D
