Halloween Horrors at Universal Studios Singapore

I’ve never really celebrated Halloween properly. (Not that there’s anything to “celebrate” per se)

I’ve always wanted to dress up in a cool (and by cool I mean a non-slutty, legitimate) Halloween costume and go trick or treating with my friends. Having said that, I don’t live in America, so if I wound up knocking on peoples doors in a scary costume asking for candy, Singaporeans would probably call the police on my ass. So the next best way to have fun during Halloween… is scaring the pants off myself at Universal Studios Singapore’s Halloween Horror Nights 2!!! Or if you’re a girl in crisis you can go to Zouk / *insert other random nightclub here* baring your midriff and cleavage taking pictures with random horny men.

Thank you Universal Studios Singapore (USS) and Resorts World Sentosa for the invites! I’ve never experienced anything like that night before. I don’t think I have screamed that much in a single evening. It was like doing extreme cardio for 15 minutes straight every time I enter a haunted house!!!

Halloween Horrors at USS runs from 8pm-1am on select weekends during Halloween month and turns the normal day theme park into a freaky haunted house maze and spooky characters galore at night. We went on the very first night the event opened and boy was it crowded like crazy!!! Thousands of people squeezing like sardines just to get into USS. We managed to skip all lines however, thank goodness.

Upon entering the theme park, you’ll realize how much effort has gone into making this event a special one.

They hired hundreds of dedicated scare actors running around the park waiting to creep up on you to give you a fright, there’s loud creepy music playing constantly + convincing props and set ups everywhere… the mood was VERY spooky indeed.

Mother of god.

I mean come on. Make up alone must’ve taken all day!!! I love the attention to detail Universal Studios always delivers.

The highlight of Halloween Horrors is three themed 1) Haunted Houses – Insanitarium (mental hospital)

2) Death Alley (Chinese themed, think creepy old grandmother during 7th month) and 3) Dungeon of Damnation (my favorite! I think this is just a random mix of weird stuff. My personal favorite! Not for the claustrophobic)

No photography is allowed inside the haunted houses so I couldn’t take pictures to show you guys but the special effects were crazily impressive and realistic. I especially liked the room full of fake maggots that we all had to step on hahaha. The most freaky part for me was being alone with Sam in a room that had strobe lights constantly flashing off. Have you ever seen a horror movie whereby the lights flickered on and off in a pitch black room, and every time the light came on, the ghost was nearer to you?

Yep. That happened to me. Except this was in real life and really CONVINCING actors reaching out to grab me and I think I actually almost cried LOLOL. I held onto Sam, closed my eyes shut and wouldn’t budge… he literally had to drag me along. I wouldn’t move unless I had Nicholas on my left, and Sam on my right. I was clutching onto them EVERY step of the way. Imma girl!!! I can be one!!!!!1111

If you think you might suffer from a heart attack from the frights, don’t worry, there’s USS staff stationed every few meters to make sure everything happens in the name of good natured fun, no violence or injury will be involved. If you also think that you won’t be scared, YOU WILL BE. People jumping out at you from every damn corner!!!

Apart from the haunted houses and scare actors, some of the rides are open as well! Most of the roller coasters, mainly.

Everyone had spooky make up on! Every. Single. Person.

Ok maybe except the security guards. See those “blood packs”? They’re packets of passionfruit juice apparently! Cute idea.

I can’t figure out if this is a mask or not!!!! It looks so real! And their eyes… they even went out of their way to buy and put on funky colored contacts. Kudos to the production team.

No idea what this thing is but it tried to scare me hence the stupid expression on my face…..

I can’t imagine the life of people who have to wear the ultra heavy mascot costumes like this one, all night until 1am… In Singapore’s humid, warm weather + maddening crowds. I sincerely hope they’re paid a lot.

Sam & his dream wife. LOL

Me and my dream husband.

Just kidding…. Hahah. *coughs*

Little girls and old women are the scariest ghost characters.

Holy Shiz O______O

Tomorrow (28th October 2012) is the last day of Halloween Horrors at Universal Studios!!! Grab some friends and go and have some fun. Scream and live a little. Don’t commit the grave error of NOT purchasing the Express tickets, because trust me, waiting 2.5 hours in line like 90% of the other people in the park for a single attraction is not fun at all…

I enjoyed myself heapsss and I hope USS will have Christmas themed events in December!!! PLEASE!!!

Happy Halloween everyone! No matter if you’re slutting or spooking it up, have a spooktacular time. (Omg I’m so corny). Signing off with the only relatively cute mascot of the day – an oversized voodoo doll.

I love the iPhone 5……. and it loves me too

My mum is awesome in ways that are totally random. Random in the sense that she would call me up one fine afternoon, totally out of the blue, going “Do you want the iPhone 5?”

………..DO I WANT THE iPHONE 5? Is that even a question??!!?!!?

After 2 weeks of using it, I’m completely smitten. I love how lightweight it is, the processing is definitely much faster, the screen display is bigger and absolutely gorgeous. But most of all, I love the improved cameras. Both front and back. I’m constantly snapping pictures of stuff, and I hardly bring my DSLR out to play these days, so the iPhone camera HAS to do the job for me. I’m always snapping & uploading on the go. (Instagram & Twitter) I was using an iPhone 4 before I switched to the iPhone 5 so it’s a pretty big culture shock!!! For 4S users I don’t think the difference is that noticeable, although Siri is now more advanced. Except I still don’t use it to do anything practical except chatting with her when I’m awfully bored. (Siri, what is the meaning of life? Siri, I’m bored. Siri, what is love?). Anyway here are some iPhone 5 FRONT CAMERA camhoe snapshots for your viewing pleasure….. You will not believe how awesome it is!!! With good lighting and a steady hand, the quality is pretty damn good.

Warning: Do not proceed if you get deeply offended by overwhelming self-love, extremely long faux eyelashes and cleavage staring at you in the face.

I asked Sam what title would be appropriate for a blog post full of narcissistic shots. He said, “For My Male Readers”

If you’re wondering why the hell I’m dressed up to the nines…. well I was going to do an outdoor photoshoot to take some nice pictures for my blog & Youtube channel background the other day, but it rained as I was about to leave the house. :( So I did a mini photo shoot at home, with the new iPhone 5 & me. The rescheduled shoot is happening TODAY, with a talented photographer I really wanna shoot with, so…

PLEASE DON’T RAIN TODAY, WEATHER GODS. OTL

(This also means you will probably be seeing more photos of me on the blog in this similar get up in the near future, brace yourselves.)

Paris Baguette Cafe

Was out on a date with my neighbour and her baby, she was excited to try this new cafe called “Paris Baguette Cafe” that opened up in the middle of Wisma Atria in Orchard Road about 3 months ago, and it intrigued me the moment I caught sight of it.

I knew I’d want to share about this place with y’all because everything about it is interesting..

1) Paris Baguette Cafe. What an awful name, but it’s kinda funny and it sticks.

2) It’s not even from Paris. It is a popular Korean chain bakery.

3) Look at those flashy neon lights. So attention grabbing, so cheesy, so awesome.

Beautiful cakes that greet you at the front of the cafe!!! These are the kind of cakes you look at once, and just have to stare at them for a few seconds longer. I bake cakes too, but these look amazeballs. :)

Look at all those juicy mangoes!!!! OMG I died and went to cake heaven. I want to pluck those plump mango pieces off my computer screen and put them into my mouth. I have half a mind of going back there next time and buying this whole cake for myself.

It makes so much sense that this cafe is from Korea. You don’t really see much of indulgent cakes such as oreo cheesecakes or chocolate truffle cakes at Paris Baguette Cafe. You see really light, fluffy, elegant, pretty cakes… which Korean girls wouldn’t mind eating, because they’re so pretty and light. How often do you see a fat Korean girl???

Awww this is SO gorgeous!!! *wants* I might just layer my cake with rose petals next time! What a fantastic idea.

If you’re constantly on the look out for an all day brunch place in Singapore like I am, you can add Paris Baguette Cafe to your list. There’s this one item that keeps me coming back.

Bacon Croissant Brunch, $17. Flaky croissant… crispy bacon piece… garlicky, butter mushrooms… side salad.. wedges with tomato sauce. MY kind of brunch!!!

The mushrooms are completely out of this worlddd.

I had this twice in a week because it was that good. I’d take this over Eggs Benedict or any other popular brunch food any day! If you love croissant, bacon or mushrooms (uh I love all three) then you NEED to try this. I find it very reasonable pricing because breakfast food prices tend to be on the high side for what it’s worth normally, I think (IIRC) Paris Baguette Cafe does not have the 10% service surcharge, and GST is also included in the pricing.

17% at the end of the bill usually adds up to a lot y’know!! So this is definitely a plus. What you see is what you get.

The other main course for our brunch, Cheese Omelette With A Difference, $18.

I’d say it’s decent enough but over priced for eggs, really. It’s not that hard to make a good omelette (I make a mean one at home!) all you need is some butter, milk, and perfect timing. Oh and cracked black pepper + truffle oil makes scrambled eggs / omelettes DIVINE. This dish has got nothing on the bacon croissant but I suppose if you’re mad about eggs and wanna go for a less sinful brunch, this would be it. Although I didn’t appreciate how it was only half warm and a little bit too runny on the side…

Besides serving all day brunch items (other choices include pancakes and ratatouille), they’re supposed to be well known for their bakery. To be honest I’m not that big a fan of bread at all, I look at pieces of bread like they’re giant pieces of carbs, which essentially… is what it is. Although their bread items were quite aesthetically pleasing, I found the taste factor to have fallen flat on its face. My neighbour thought their pastries were decent though. *shrugs*

We didn’t really have space in our stomachs after our main courses to try big pieces of bread, so we tried the petite looking Mushroom Foccacio, which was the most blah thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. Tasteless bread, cold mushrooms….. I didn’t even bother taking a second bite.

The Chocolat Blanc, which is bread encasing a gooey white chocolate center, was ok… I think neighbourhood bakeries are generally better than them :/ I know these are strange bread choices but my friend picked them, so…..

If you walk over to the other side of the cafe, you’ll find they also serve pre-packed sandwiches and salads. I’ve tried one salad which was meh (most cost around $8-9 per box) and my neighbour said her sandwich was also uninspiring.

They don’t stand out at all and taste like just… food. It isn’t bad, but it’s certainly not great. They’re just neatly packed and stacked, that’s all. Save your money and calories, go for their brunch items or if you’re that kinda person, try their breads. At least those were actually very fairly priced.

What does make an impression is their desserts. Evidently, from the start of this post you could tell.. I’m a big dessert person! :P

I was told Paris Baguette Cafe’s star item is their Royal Pudding. They have mango and berry flavored puddings, that have a more panna cotta texture and taste than pudding. If you’re expecting their mango pudding to taste like the typical kind you find in Chinese restaurants with milk, forget it. You’re going to be disappointed. To me, it was like panna cotta with brown sugar. I liked it for its unique taste! I just wished the mango flavor was more sour and strong.

Strawberry Shortcake, $7.50

It looks like a sizeable portion in this photo, but it was pretty damn small in real life. Nevertheless, it’s so pretty I couldn’t not have it!!!! Texture was very light, elegant and fluffy, and was gone in seconds. Other than that, not really special… way too small a portion to properly enjoy it. Neighbourhood bakeries sponge cake also fluffy what, right? But I think that’s the whole point of this strawberry shortcake – to be light, small, and pretty. Like I said, this cafe is targeted at ladies. You’ll find at least 80% of their customers to be young and middled aged women, in their 20′s and 30′s. Even though I just said it was nothing too special and way too small a portion, I’d still probably order it again if I’m there. LOL because I am a fool for marketing gimmicks. And I wanna try all their other cakes!!! …I’m a girl, what do you want from me?

.
.
.

My verdict is that Paris Baguette Cafe is a hit-and-miss place. I quite fancy their desserts and interesting brunch options (do we really need another place serving Eggs Benedict?), and also for the fact that it’s in the middle of Wisma Atria, but I wouldn’t bother with their breads and cold food.

Definitely still worth checking out at least once to see if you like it or not… and try the bacon croissant brunch that I recommended! :D I’m just happy whenever a new & interesting establishment pops up in Singapore’s food scene.

Paris Baguette Cafe

435 Orchard Road #02-48/53, Wisma Atria
Tel: 6836 2010

Food quality: 3.5/5
Service / Ambience: 2/5 (Open concept, people walking past just stare at you eating. Menu has to be asked from the counter, staff relatively haughty..)
Value for Money: 3.5/5 (Good value for brunch items and breads, horrendous for drinks, just okay for desserts)
Most suitable for: Tai tais shopping in Orchard Road, new brunch place, girlfriends looking for a place to catch up, and boys who wanna bring their girls on an interesting lunch date. Not exactly suitable as a dinner or intimate place.
